Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has admitted his household is “obsessed” with Married At First Sight – amid public outcry over his selfie with cast members of the controversial reality show.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has weighed in on Married At First Sight as he revealed the controversial dating show is a staple in his household.
Mr Albanese on Tuesday said he had limited knowledge of reality TV shows like The Bachelor and The Voice as the government focused on Treasurer Jim Chalmers’s delivery of his fourth budget this evening.
“I don’t have a lot of time (to watch TV), I’ve got to say. We’ve been busy putting together a budget,” he told The Fox’s Fifi, Fev, and Nick.
Mr Albanese then revealed he had an “enormous amount in common” with his fiancée Jodie Haydon, including a shared taste for Australia’s most popular TV show.
“We have the same footy team, the same broad political views, and the same TV shows,” he said.
“Although she’s obsessed with Married At First Sight. I’m not quite as obsessed,” the Labor leader admitted.
“But she’s not into musicals! I love musicals… I dragged Jodie to West Side Story last year and loved it. She just tolerated it.”
It comes after Mr Albanese took to Instagram earlier this month to post a selfie with MAFS couple Jeff and Rhi.
The candid photo showed the Prime Minister grinning from ear to ear as Jeff placed a hand on his shoulder between Rhi.
“I’m pro marriage-hope to have one this year! Bumped into @mafs stars Jeff and Rhi in Perth,” he wrote in the caption, which was a tongue-in-cheek reference to his forthcoming wedding to Ms Hayden.
However, viewers lashed out at his decision to post the photo with the reality stars in the wake of an ongoing NSW police investigation into MAFS following one groom’s controversial violent act where he punched a wall.
“Nice to see you support a show that is currently being investigated for violence against women…why won’t you address the femicide that is ongoing in our country????” one person said.
“This isn’t it. Supporting a show that clearly falls well short of protecting its participants. Nah,” said another critic.
“Not a great show to support, really. Disturbing content,” one more added.
Other people speculated Mr Albanese was orchestrating a “PR stunt” to appeal to voters ahead of the Federal Election, to be held on or before May 17.
“Albanese is giving Karen [sic] Rudd a run for his money when it comes to cringeworthy PR stunts. Chat with (media personality) Abbie Chatfield. Cricket with Raygun, and now a selfie with the MAFS couple. Call the Election!” one person said.

It can now be revealed Mr Albanese’s seemingly heightened interest in wedding bells comes as he considered eloping with Ms Haydon last month.
On Tuesday, he told Brisbane radio B105 the couple seriously considered a secret marriage on Valentine’s Day, which was the anniversary of their engagement, to curb public speculation about their wedding.
“We did think about, I’ve got to say, on the anniversary, really quietly, just doing it to stop speculation,” he said.
“But we decided that might get some speculation back as well, so we didn’t. I did think about doing it really quietly.”
“The wedding will be in the second half of the year, it won’t be elaborate. The only thing that’s finalised is our ring bearer. And that, of course, is (our pet) Toto the wonder dog.”
The Prime Minister proposed to Ms Haydon at The Lodge on Valentine’s Day in 2024 after dinner at Canberra restaurant Italian and Sons.
While their wedding date remains unknown, the couple has ruled out a church wedding and acknowledged it would not occur before the Election.
